This is my not-so-introduction post.  I'm not going to tell you that much about myself, except that if you're looking for an Asian lover, I'm not your type because I'm not Asian, Caucasian geek that I am.  If you're looking at the avatar and thinking what a cute Asian guy I am, you should know that the guy in my avatar is really a Taiwanese pop singer I really like, Jay Chou, so you should be stalking him instead.

If you weren't just reading because you're looking for an Asian hottie, keep reading here. )

Hung Jung's Folk Songs Part 1 [Nov. 28th, 2010|07:30 pm]
[Tags|, , , , ]
[Current Mood |happyhappy]

This is the first part of a compilation of Taiwanese folk songs performed by one of Ang It-Hong's sons, Hung Jung (洪荣宏).  YesAsia has quite a few of his albums, but I couldn't find a lot of downloads for them on the Internet.

Why Hung Jung?  I was watching a Taiwanese TV variety show hosted by Jacky Wu and Patty Hou and he was on a certain episode.  I watched out of curiosity and liked what I heard, so I wanted to listen to more.

Ang It-Hong Memorial Album "Love's Flower" [Nov. 24th, 2010|07:39 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , , , , , , , , , ]
[Current Mood |nostalgicnostalgic]

I posted a short bit on Ang It-Hong's death here earlier this year.  Since his death, his sons Eric Hung and Hung Jung helped put together an album commemorating his songs with the help of various pop artists.  The album contains new songs inspired by Ang It-Hong, such as "阿爸" ("Father") written by Jay Chou and Vincent Fang.  (This report notes that this is odd considering that Jay's parents are divorced and he lives with his mom.)  There are new versions of Ang It-Hong's songs, such as Crowd Lu's "PK version" of "思慕的人" ("Person I Admire").  There are more medley-type songs and even songs that mix the older tunes with new tunes.  There's quite a bit of Taiwanese/Hokkien, as would be expected, but also a lot of Mandarin.

How do you feel when a favorite band breaks up? Do you still follow the original band members in their new projects?

View 1051 Answers

Aww!  I hate it when a band I like breaks up!  I'm not sure which is worse, though:  They break up or they stop releasing albums after one very promising debut.  (Yes, the latter refers to Fusion.)  Not all break-ups are caused by problems between the different members of the band.  That wasn't the case with the Dada.  I'm not sure why Mrs. This stopped, but I hope they resurface.  There's also the issue of hiatus brought about by compulsory military service in Taiwan, which has been a problem for various bands including Mayday.

I still follow Peng Tan in his solo career and the bassist for the Dada is in another band now, but with a female lead singer who sounds quite unlike Peng Tan.  (It would be possible for a female singer to sound like sodagreen's Qingfeng, however.)  I find it easier to follow the vocalist than other members of the band, though, especially when the vocalist writes most of the songs.

[Current Mood |happyhappy]

In case anyone wants to buy Jay Chou songs in MP3 format, you can buy several albums (including "The Era") here.  You can also get them with Rhapsody, which allows you to rent an unlimited number of songs.  Yes, there were some songs there earlier, but they disappeared.  Also, LeeHom's new album is up and the MP3s from his last concert will also be up soon. :)

Sad Train [Sep. 12th, 2010|08:12 pm]
[Tags|, , , , ]
[Current Mood |happyhappy]

I'm sorry I haven't posted anything and I'm also sorry for everyone on my F-list:  I haven't been keeping up with anything posted in the last few weeks, so if I missed something major (e.g. Fusion finally put out a second album), please tell me!  (No, they didn't to my knowledge, so hopefully you didn't just read out-of-context and run around your room screaming for joy!)  I will be very busy this semester, though, and won't be here much.

So I'm finally going to post the other Yang Junrong album I bought.  You can find more info on the (sad) previous post and can find the names of the tracks and the lyrics in their original language here.  Track 9 should be entitled "This Old Morning Train," but it's misspelled on Mojim because the people who posted the lyrics were most likely not very good with English and made some very noticeable typos.  The two instrumental tracks listed weren't on my copy of the CD, probably because it's a reissued version.

You can download the album here

I also want to recommend an album for fans of Chinese folkish artists.  If you like Chang Shilei or San Dingding or Cold Fairyland, Wu Tong's "我一直听见自己的笙音" is very much worth a listen.*  The title is a pun.  It means "I Keep Hearing My Own Voice," but instead of "voice" it has "the sound of my sheng" in it, since he plays the sheng. One of the tracks is instrumental and uses the sheng.  You can find the album here on Indievox or here on YesAsia.   You can also see a performance of one of the songs on the album here

* Not the same as Denis Ng, a CantoPop singer with the same Chinese name.

Maoshan Lee - Taiwanese Hits Vol. 1 [Aug. 29th, 2010|08:14 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , ]
[Current Mood |hungryhungry]

I posted one of his Mandarin compilations earlier, so you can find it under the "Maoshan Lee" tag if you missed it.

Recently, I've probably been watching too much Taiwanese TV. XD A couple of the shows I watch have quite a bit of Taiwanese/Hokkien in them:  "百万大歌星" and "王牌大明星."  The former is a contest in which various singers try to remember lyrics to various songs under 10 different categories, usually including a Taiwanese/Hokkien category.  The latter is hosted by Patty Hou and Jacky Wu and they interview different celebrities, including ones who sing in dialect.  As a result of watching these shows, I've heard more and more Hokkien songs and singers and want to buy some albums because the Taiwanese oldies are really hard to find to download.  That being said, I want to buy some Hong Ronghong in the future because I've mostly only found his newer songs for download.  I like oldies and I really, really like the way Taiwanese sounds.
